12 string guitar compostions by Jean-Michel Kampara


A collection of readings and compostions embodying hundreds of years of institutional violence and hauntings on the island of Seili. Calling in the seals, the ticks, the missing bodies, the rocks, the plants to guide us. The performance took place in a stunning garage in Parkano HUNAJAJYVÄ:Kaidat Vedet a festival and art exhibition.
Songs for the Wreck is part of Själö Poeisis s a critical study of power structures through plants, especially the common plants – the weeds, the vulgaris written and directed by Lotta Petronella. 
The work will be published as a book and a play in 2025.

SEA FOUNDATION Online and in Person in Helsinki and TilburgA performative reading of an excerpt from Experiments in Imagining Otherwise, a text by Lola Olufemi; a poem called Rant by Diane di Prima; and with the reading of the tarot card number 12 and 20 - the hanged and judgment. The reading will take place online and in person at Oksasenkatu 11, in Helsinki,during the exhibition&#38;nbsp;If I Can not Cry in the Subway curated by Julia Fidder. If I Can Not Cry in the Subway is a collective story about loss and grief where individual experiences are allowed to exist together. It is elaborating on the research Grieve with Me published by Julia Fidder on our webiste and on the curated publication which is shown at SEA Foundation's vitrine and can be purchased via our webshop.

Sittings With Plants &#38;amp; Collective Moth Reading by Lotta Petronella
(PERFORMANCE) WONDERFRUIT Chonburi, ThailandCurated by Francesca Bertolotti-Bailey, Lotta Petronella will perform a collective tarot reading using two hand-painted tarot decks: a collection of butterflies and a collection of moths native to two different Finnish islands. Oscillating between day and night, light and shadow, and life and death, the reading will move us all from a state of default carelessness to conscious care. Read more about the event here.

Interview With CAA Co-founder, Artist And Filmmaker Lotta Petronella
(INTERVIEW) CONTEMPORARY ART ARCHIPELAGO 
In this interview, Petronella speaks about her journey through the archipelago and her transitioning artistic and filmic practice that brings people, places and plants into dialogue with one another. Her award-winning documentary film, Själö – The Island of Souls, premiered in spring 2020, and last summer she launched her critical feminist herbarium, Själö Poiesis. Petronella was a commissioned artist in this year’s Helsinki Biennial. Her exhibition Materia Medica of Islands was installed on Vallisaari island until 17 September 2023, where she also performed Laments along with Lau Nau and a live choir.&#38;nbsp;

&#38;nbsp;SJÄLÖ HERBARIUM
(performance) Jokistudio Tehdas Teatteri 2025Själö Herbarium&#38;nbsp;– a performance, lecture and choral adaption created for the stage – debuted in Turku,&#38;nbsp;May 2025. The final chapter in Lotta Petronella’s expanded body of work on the island of Seili in the Turku archipelago, Själö Herbarium focuses on the island’s history as a hospital, the dawn of the various institutions present today; reading Seili as a part of the West’s institutional history during the 17th &#38;amp; 18th centuries. Själö Herbarium is a dramatic spacial study, an event and encounter unfolding with the public. The work features fictive and biographical voices; it combines documentary and essay forms with music composed for a choir performing the role of the witness. Själö Herbarium is&#38;nbsp;an archive of perspectives that narrate the island in waya that have not been, and cannot be recorded.

SJÄLÖ HERBARIUM
(installation) Jokistudio Tehdas Teatteri 2025 Själö Herbarium is the third instalment of the Själö Poiesis anthologye by Lotta Petronella. Initiated in 2016, her documentary film Själö – Island of Souls premiered in 2020 at CPH:DOX. The second instalment took the form of a radio essay; Själö- A Place And A Mental Space aired on YLE later the same year. Seili is part of Finland’s history of science and its institutions can be compared to its European counterparts like Hôpital de la Salpêtrière in Paris which was founded in 1656. Själö Herbarium is a record of plants collected on the island. The knowledge gathered from herbs, flowers and the wider ecology becomes the ground and framework for the audience to move through.Concept, direction and installation: Lotta Petronella&#38;nbsp;Production: Lotta Petronella / Kolmas Tila Själö Workgroup

SPARROWS &#38;amp; MYSTICS
(performance) Drifts Festival - Unknown Territories: Forests at Ala-Malmi Park&#38;nbsp;2025 Unknown Territories intertwine Indigenous knowledge with a critique of capitalist exploitation, fostering a deeper awareness of conservation, cultural revival, and human-nature relationships. Each year, the initiative unfolds as a transcultural and multidisciplinary festival featuring audiovisual performances, site-specific artworks, concerts, film screenings, lectures, and exhibitions. Produced in collaboration with local and translocal cultural practitioners, the festival invites audiences to critically examine environmental degradation and extractivism, while nurturing sustainable imaginaries rooted in mutuality, resistance, and resilience.

SPARROWS &#38;amp; MYSTICS
(performance)&#38;nbsp;Shared Grounds at Hunter’s Point South Park 2025
A roaming outdoor exhibition in Hunter’s Point South Park, Shared Grounds gathers performative works by  Lotta Petronella, Carmen Baltzar, Kastehelmi Korpijaakko, Jodie Lyn-Kee-Chow, and Jemila Macewan – three Finnish artists and two New York-based members of the Flux Factory artist collective. Shared Grounds activated a series of performances on June 28, 2025 in Long Island City. Informed by eco-feminist thought, Shared Grounds speculates on placemaking via interspecies alliances and knowledge production, and gives thought to the potential for neighborly relations, codes, and customs in a public realm defined by humans and nonhumans alike.

MATERIA MEDICA OF ISLANDS
(exhibition &#38;amp; performance with) Helsinki Biennial 2023 
Materia Medica of Islands&#38;nbsp;is a durational, site-sensitive work. It holds within it an apothecary, a lamenting choir, nightly recordings of moths and a commemorative tribute to Ilma Lindgren who secured the freedom to roam and forage in Finland. This transdisciplinary artwork of healing, song, and ingestion interacts with the diverse inhabitants of Vallisaari Island. Through live events and performances the work invokes an oracle, a cosmology of the island.&#38;nbsp;Materia Medica of Islands is Lotta Petronella's multidisciplinary creation. Materia Medica of Islands is a sanctuary amongst the eerie military structures of Vallisaari island. Voices of a ‘lamenting choir’ waft above wooden shelves lined with countless vials – ‘Mugwort for dreaming’ and ‘St Johnswort for melancholy, picked under a July full moon’. On a side wall are hung dozens of frenzied embroideries of moths – &#38;nbsp;species that have been studied on the island as indicators of climate change. - Wallpaper

The Helsinki Biennial is an international visual arts event that brings high-level contemporary art to Vallisaari and other parts of Helsinki. The biennial was organized for the second time from June 11 to September 17, 2023. Laments is a series of choral performances, experienced in front of the apothecary – a part of Materia Medica of Islands. Lamenting together is a practice of collective healing, a tradition of mourning held and performed by women. A person's life in the universe is as long as a butterfly's life on an island. A moth only lives for a short time - from a few days to a couple of months.
PSYCHE is a 16mm live-accompanied film performance.&#38;nbsp;A short film about moths, an island, and a border state. The short film was shot July 2023 in Vallisaari. In the piece, the choir summons the souls of moths, taking you to another world. In the hypnotic meeting of the night and the island, Manaus is a deep prayer, an exorcism and a dirge for the loss of nature.&#38;nbsp;

KIITOS ILMA: A commemoration to Ilma Lindgren
(performance) Helsinki Biennial 2023 

KIITOS ILMA is a commemoration to Ilma Lindgren, a working class woman who fought for her right to pick lingonberries. Her struggle secured ’jokaisenoikeudet’ everyone’s right to roam free and forage  (1914-1920). She was the first person to win a court case against the landowners. Berry pickers were mainly women and children who had no legal rights. Ilma was able to take the landowners to court because she was a widow. 

The event was a collaboration with forager and chef Sami Tallberg who created a whipped tribute to Ilma. The parade with the Laments choir and an open call choir was conducted by Lau Nau. The banners were created by textile artist Meadhbh McMahon and Ilma was performed by Cecile Orblin and Gerard Mannix Flynn. 

A talk with Eija Lehmuskallio/LuontoPortti in conversation with Sami Tallberg was moderated by Josh Allen and live trnslated by Simo Vassinen and took place a day before the commemoration party. Writer Anu Huttunen also gave a lecture on the life, struggle and resistance of Ilma. Kiitos Ilma was written/directed and composed by Lotta Petronella.

PEELING AN ONION with Gabriela Ariana

Peeling an Onion is a collective and intimate space of dreaming, sharing and lamenting.  Onions help us to cry, to release, to pray. Onions have been used for thousands of years as food, medicine &#38;amp; protection. The etymology of the word is one &#38;amp; unity referring to the layers of an onion as part of something bigger. Peeling an Onion is a gathering of singing and gestures that are all connected to onions and collective ways of grieving. Grief as a form of resistance and nourishment. The gatherers are invited to join around the table to peel, sing and share.
New Performance Turku Biennale is a unique performance art biennale that presents current trends in art to local and international audiences. Activities include residencies and large-scale collaborations with local communities and actors. The goal of the New Performance Turku Biennale is to take the principles of social, ecological and economic sustainability of operations even further. The focus of the activity is inviting high-profile artists to Turku and building a connection between artists, local and international communities and diverse audiences. SJÄLÖ POEISIS APOTHECARY(installation) New Performance Festival 2022–2023

The Apothecary is an ongoing investigation and installation of medicine: essences, scents and plant pigments made on and with the island. The Apothecary is part of Själö Poeisis herbarium, a collection of texts and interventions, a choir, lecture performances, plant cards and botanical sessions.&#38;nbsp;

Essences are subtle, vibrational medicine. They are one of our oldest forms of healing, they have been used and made for thousands of years. An essence can be made with any living being or environment. The essence of the plant, flower or place is imprinted in the water under the sun, moonlight, wind, rain, snow creating a kind of liquid consciousness of the invisible, space and time.


How do you know what you know? Exercises in Attentiveness events were organised collaboratively by CAA Contemporary Art Archipelago and New Performance Turku. MARKED TREES
(exhibition) Megacosm Project 8 Gallery, Melbourne 2022

Marked trees are 111 documents of pine trees that have been girdled using a chainsaw creating two deep cuts on the bark of the tree. The technique is intended to kill the trees slowly. Girdeling is a method of sterilising the trees. This is a form of forest managment executed by Metsähallitus on Seili. Knowing the history of the island as a detention centre and a prison for those not seen as fitting societal norms of the times there is an uncanny haunting taking place. The ghost being the institutional structures present on the island rather than the individuals sent there.

READING WITH PLANTS Private reading performance(performance series) How do you know what you know? Exercises in Attentiveness 2022 Tarot Herbarium in collaboration with Cecilia Westerberg
Seili and its myriad spectres have been guiding the work of CAA together with artists and scientists. The ghosts of environmental transformation, histories of othering, and reproductive labour of care have not called for explanation or exorcism, but rather invited acts of conjuring and conspiring with them. They have demanded a reckoning in the face of the abundant inheritances, so as to recall knowledges and sensibilities that lie hidden in the long shadows cast by traditions considered reasonable.
Reading with Plants feeds into and exists alongside a herbarium, lecture performances, a choir work, an apothecary and botanical sessions. Comprising a set of 26 plant cards loosely based on the cosmology of Tarot, it folds into and out of a larger body of work, Själö Poiesis, which in-turn is a critical study of power structures through plants, especially common plants; the weeds, the vulgaris. – by Selina OakesThe performance series took place on the island of Ruissalo; it was organised by Contemporary Art Archiepelago in association with New Performance Turku 2022. SLEEPING WITH PLANTS(performance series) Seili 2021&#38;nbsp;

You prepare for the night by dressing up in a white woolly gown. It’s a shield, a veil, an invitation to sleep with the island. It’s late in the evening and the sun will set soon. You find a spot by the logged trees. The land has been ravaged and you immediately think of revenge. Stumps of old quacking aspen trees stand still and lifeless. They were sterilised, girdled to make sure they will not grow back. Polish by origin, unwanted because of their roots. You lie down amongst the debris of trees and dead leaves. You press your chin hard against the ground. So hard so it hurts. You close your eyes. The soil is damp. There is a colony of ants moving underground. Clutches of primula veris grow on the edge of the old forest. You sense their presence. Their flowers hanging down like heads bowing in deep prayer. You embody their starlike yellow flowers creating tiny beacons of light directed towards the earth below. The dead are everywhere. A blue moon gazes over the island, humming like a bird. You become a bridge, a river. You become a witness waiting for messages to reach your blood, your water. Your vessel your body. Your sleeping body your recorder, your compass. Sleeping with the island is an ongoing recorded performance initiated on the island of Seili 2021. An archive of 35 prints were exhibited at Melbourne’s Project8 Gallery in December 2022.&#38;nbsp;

For centuries, a closed institution served as a final destination for socially transgressive women at Själö, an isolated island in the Baltic Sea. The outcast women were kept there in detention to be observed, studied and measured—in much the same way as the scientists now focus on the surrounding nature at the research center the place has been converted to. While a young scientist is collecting samples on the island, the past emerges in the whispers of the unsent letters and empty rooms of the hospital. The space fills up with hidden memories as the invisible archives become alive. Whose stories are remembered and whose are forgotten?

Land Without God is an intimate portrait of a family coming to terms with decades of institutional abuse and the impact it has had and is still having on their lives. The film examines the legacy of Institutional abuse by the Irish Church and State over the last century. The story follows the writer, Gerard Mannix Flynn, together with generations of his family who for the first time, speak openly together about their childhood traumatic experience of being removed from the family home and being incarcerated in children’s homes and industrial institutions run by religious catholic orders. 	is a filmmaker, artist and curator based on an island in Finland. She is co- founder of CAA Contemporary Art Archipelago and has worked with and on islands for nearly two decades. Since her internationally awarded film Själö - Island of Souls (2020), she has been leading a multidisciplinary collaborative research Själö Poeisis on the island of Seili. Her latest work Materia Medica of Islands was a new commission for Helsinki Biennial in 2023. In addition to her filmmaking and art practice, Petronella is a devoted medicine and flower essence maker and tarot scholar. She also writes poems, makes soundscapes and runs a podcast called Little screams.

"The peppered moth (Biston betularia), so named for the dense freckling of black across its white wings, is a curious creature. During the industrial revolution, its numbers exploded because it was better camouflaged on newly soot-darkened birch trees, typifying a form of adaptation known as “industrial melanism.” I first encountered the insect on the island Vallisaari, a military fort turned state park off the coast of Helsinki, where I sat for a tarot reading with the Finnish artist and filmmaker Lotta Petronella. In her custom-made deck, the peppered moth – the “5” card – plays the role of the hierophant, or the giver of embodied and intellectual wisdom, whose evolution suggests a survival strategy for humans struggling to adapt to 21st-century climate crisis."

"Materia Medica of Islands (2023) by Lotta Petronella—an artist, medicine and flower essence maker and tarot scholar—is one of the site-sensitive artworks anchored in the island’s offerings. Her contribution, for which she collaborated with chef and foraging pioneer Sami Tallberg and composer and performer Lau Nau, presents a cosmology of the island through a transdisciplinary artwork. Inspired by early-20th-century activist Ilma Lindgren, who fought for the right to roam and forage in the wild, it includes an apothecary with local medicinal plants displayed in a shed alongside miscellaneous objects, drawings, embroideries and sound recordings. An additional source of inspiration comes from moths, which have been subjects of study on Vallisaari Island since the 1960s, serving as important indicators for monitoring climate change. In Petronella’s artwork, various types of these ephemeral nocturnal pollinators adorn a tarot deck made by the artist, offering spiritual guidance to visitors while also symbolizing the fragile vitality of the ecosystem."

	–Helsinki Biennial 2023: New Directions May Emerge

"... before boarding the return ferry to Helsinki, I come across probably my favourite installation, the site-specific and durational work Materia Medica of Islands (2023). Inside an ageing wooden shed, the artists Lotta Petronella and Lau Nau along with Sami Tallberg, a Finnish chef celebrated for conjuring up delicious dishes from foraging expeditions, have laid out for us a presentation that speaks of close attention to nature, to plants and animals, and expertise in deploying their benefits. Dried flowers and herbs gathered locally hang on the walls, while some are bottled and presented in their medicinal forms, along with herbal tinctures. Portraits of the island’s moths and butterflies have been embroidered and combined with poems in their honour. The installation is in memory of Ilma Lindgren, who secured the people the right to roam and forage across Finland. Sound works include a lamenting choir and nightly recordings of moths, and many live events are planned for the duration of the biennial."

"Here, healing singing and nutrition create a dialogue with the flora and fauna of Vallisaari. The pharmacy is created in the footsteps of Ilma Lindgreen, who in 1914 began a fight for equal rights to roam and forage freely in Finlands forests. This legal battle took years but resulted in implication of ‘every mans right’, a right for free personal use of nature. The pharmacy is filled with extractions of the plants found on Vallisaari, many of which have been brought on by Russian soldiers during their time on the island. Alongside these plants, there’s some hundred moths that are a part of the island’s unique nature, here displayed as tarot-cards. "Island of Souls is part visual poem, party history lesson and part melancholy memorial to the women whose life stories have been lost in the fog of time. Arriving on Själö across an icy sea, the director begins to draw subtle parallels between the detached, scientific manner in the current biological team catalogue ticks and the way in which human inmates were once monitored on the island.Petronella approaches her multi-layered subject in an elliptical manner, switching fluidly between different moods, themes and time periods. Strikingly beautiful close-up shots of beetles, frogs, plants and microscopic creatures form a wondrous background chorus of fertile nature. "

"Själö är en stillsam och vacker film som utgår från öns historia och natur. På Själö fanns redan under 1600-talet ett sjukhus för spetälskepatienter, och under 1700-talet började sjukhuset gradvis förvandlas till ett mentalhospital. Sjukhuset stängde på 1960-talet, och strax efteråt öppnade Åbo universitet en biologisk forskningsstation på ön. Numera studerar forskarna bland annat fästingar."

Materia Medica of Islands is a durational site sensitive work. It holds within itan apothecary, a lamenting choir, nightly recordings of moths and a commemoration to the woman who secured everyone’s right to public access to the land and to forage. Together they create an oracle, a cosmology of the island.
The apothecary is an ongoing investigation and installation of medicinal plants and recipes to nurture resistance. Lamenting together is a practice of collective healing, a tradition of mourning held and performed by women.
In the garden, under a waning moon, a choir gathers to lament

In 1914 Ilma Lindgren, a working class woman and widow, fought solely for public access to the land. After six years of battle she won the case to secure the law of everyone’s right to forage. It all started with a bucket of lingonberries picked on an island. Learning to name and gather your own food creates intimate connections with the place. Eating and ingesting wild plants and berries is a direct relationship with the soil and the light. Looking after oneself and one’s community is the root of care.
